Behind The Lens

A Year of Silence... and What It Taught Me

Pheeew... October already! Time moves fast, doesn't it?

I just realised it’s been nearly a year since I’ve written one of these.
And in that time, everything has changed. Not just in my work, but in who I am.

I used to think growth meant staying consistent.
Post every week. Build momentum. Never stop.
But the truth is, that rhythm started to drown out what really mattered.

So, I hit pause.

Where have I been?

(When you're done reading, this video will catch you up)

Well, these past nine months have been some of the most impactful of my life.

I fell in love. I moved houses twice. I travelled to 3 different continents.

But more than anything, I burned out.

And that burnout became the turning point.

When I slowed down, I rediscovered my vision.

I realised success isn’t about how much you create. It’s about how deeply you live.

What I Learned About Filmmaking (and Life)

Here’s what this year taught me:

  1. You can’t create meaningful work when you’re disconnected from yourself.
    Depth requires stillness.
  2. Fulfilment beats metrics.
The best stories aren’t built for algorithms. They come from alignment.
  3. Purpose makes your art timeless.
When your work serves something bigger, it lasts.

That perspective shaped every project I’ve taken on since.

Documentaries such as the ones I've been head down creating recently:

'Beyond The Jungle'

A story about a jungle guide who grew up in the rainforest in Sumatra, exploring what it means to belong to nature, currently in it's editing stage.

'Water Is Life'

A film with No Taps Foundation filmed in Kenya to raise funds for clean water in rural communities. This is also still in the editing stage, but I recently put together a short piece for the No Taps Foundation’s gala day. That film alone helped them raise over $300,000 on the night for clean water projects in the communities we filmed with.

'Flowing Wood'

A slower, more personal film about Dean, a painter and surfer whose art mirrors his relationship with the ocean. I shot this one in mid-2024, and it took me nearly a year to put together and slowly release into the world, but that film became proof of what I now believe: slow stories can travel far.

It’s been quietly finding its way into the world. So far it's screened at the Noosa International Surf Film Festival, Anglet Surf Film Festival in France, and next, at my home town for Byron Bay Film Festival on October 21st.

All of these projects are proof that you don’t need to chase trends when you create with intention.
If it’s made with soul, it finds its audience (sometimes halfway across the world).

And that’s what I want to help other filmmakers experience: how to create work that lasts, not just performs.

Learn Directly From Me:

Over the past year, I’ve been quietly building something I wish existed when I was starting out...

It’s called Inner Vision — a program and community for filmmakers who want to master:
🎥 The skills — cinematography, storytelling, editing.
💰 The business — how to turn your craft into income and opportunity.
🧭 The philosophy — building a creative life rooted in purpose, not burnout.

If you’re a filmmaker, creator, or storyteller who wants to learn directly from me — not just how to make films, but how to live this path fully — 👉🏽 click here to join the waitlist to learn more about Inner Vision.

This isn’t just another course.
It’s a framework for building a filmmaking life that actually feels aligned, creative, profitable, and meaningful.

If you’ve been here since the early days, thank you.
Your support is what’s allowed me to slow down, reflect, and build something real.

The next chapter starts now... and I’d love to bring you with me.

See you soon,
Joel
