You don’t have to do it alone…

Joel Bryant // December 1st, 2024

If you had to build a house, would you attempt it alone? Probably not.

So why, as creatives, do we so often try to pull off entire projects by ourselves—without ever thinking to ask for help?

I’ll admit, I’ve always been a bit of a creative lone wolf. There’s a certain pride in taking things into your own hands, seeing a project through from start to finish. But recently, the sheer number of tasks I’ve taken on left me feeling overwhelmed and, honestly, stuck.

Between developing my personal brand, client work, documentary passion projects, building a mentorship program, and sharpening my craft, this past month has been a whirlwind of growth. But growth often comes at a cost—burnout has been hovering, waiting for its moment to strike.

Thankfully as divine timing had it, recently my friend and fellow creative filmmaker Louis reached out to me. He had a small passion project in mind and needed an extra hand to bring it to life. Initially, I hesitated. Could I really spare the time when my to-do list was already spiralling out of control?

But something told me to say yes, and I’m so glad I did.

Over two action-packed days, we dove headfirst into Louis’s vision—a little-narrative project shot in the stunning hinterlands of Byron Bay. Armed with cameras and ideas, we gathered a group of friends, crammed into the back of a vintage car, and explored the winding mountain roads.

We tested camera mounts, debated shot angles, and bounced ideas off one another. For the first time in a while, I wasn’t caught up in the pressure of perfection or the need to do it all myself. It was pure creative energy—a shared flow state that made everything feel lighter and more inspired.

This experience reminded me of something so simple yet often overlooked: collaboration is powerful. By teaming up, we were able to elevate the project to a level neither of us could have achieved alone. It wasn’t just about sharing the workload; it was about combining our perspectives, learning from one another, and reigniting a love for the process itself.

So, if you’re like me—carrying the weight of a million creative ambitions—consider this a nudge. Collaboration isn’t a sign of weakness or giving up control. It’s an opportunity to grow, to see your work through a new lens, and to rediscover why you started in the first place.

Next time you feel stuck or overwhelmed, consider reaching out to other like-minded creatives for a new perspective on your journey.
